Changing SharePoint root site

To change the SharePoint root site, follow this steps:

  1. Login to the SharePoint Admin Center:
    • Navigate to https://admin.microsoft.com and sign in with your global admin account.
    • In the left-hand menu, go to SharePoint Admin Center.
  2. Select Active sites
  3. Locate your Root Site:
    • The root site URL typically ends with .sharepoint.com. You can easily find it by sorting the URL column from A to Z, which brings it to the top.
  4. Select the root site.
  5. Select Replace site on the command bar

  6. Paste the URL of the site you want to replace with in the provided field.

  7. Click Save to save the changes.

Your new site will now be set as the root site. It may take some time for the change to propagate across SharePoint.

To Note:
  • Before replacing the root site, ensure that neither the current nor the new site is a hub site or linked to one. If a site is a hub site, unregister it first. Once the root site is replaced, you can re-register it as a hub site if needed.
  • The existing root site will be archived after the replacement process is completed.
  • The new root site must be either a communication site (SITEPAGEPUBLISHING#0) or a modern team site (STS#3) that is not associated with a Microsoft 365 group and has never had the publishing feature enabled.
